Welcome to Mrs. Kawazoe's classroom!
I'm so excited to be your child's 5th grade teacher this year! Although this year is going to be unlike any other years that we have experienced, I assure you that it will be just as academic, just as fun, and just as memorable as any other year!
I grew up in Torrance and attended Victor Elementary, Jefferson Middle School, Bert Lynn, and graduated from West High. This is my hometown and it's an honor to teach at the school that I have attended myself!
I graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication, and a Master's in Education at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Teaching is my passion AND my hobby! In my free time, I enjoy yoga and tennis, and spending time with my family. I've taught all grades from Kindergarten through adult education in my 25 years of teaching with 20 years in Torrance Unified. The experience teaching English as a Second Language in Japan and Taiwan has strengthened my ability to differentiate instruction for students from all ethnic and social backgrounds. My philosophy of teaching is to accommodate students of all levels and to inspire them to yearn for lifelong learning.
Everything you need to know about the curriculum will be posted on this website. The educational websites are great for your child if they need something extra to supplement the curriculum. The main form of communication for the class will be via e-mail.
CLASS DOJO
I will be using an app called Class Dojo, which monitors your child's behavior and academic progress throughout the year. Photos, class news, and students portfolios will also be posted on this app so you can easily see how your child is doing and be updated on what exciting things we are learning in our virtual classroom!
Students will be able to earn points virtually. You can check the status of your child's points at any time online. It is also a form of online communication between the parents and the teacher. You can text the teacher messages any time you wish and I will respond as soon as I can.
Once I have received all the parent contact information, details will be emailed to connect you on Class Dojo. Please return the GREEN CONTACT INFO SURVEY by Tuesday, Sept 3rd.
BUILDING A COMMUNITY IN THE CLASSROOM
Academics is a top priority for me. However, without a sense of community in the classroom, it is difficult to ignite the inner motivation to learn and succeed within each student. I highly believe in the teaching of character counts and having a growth mindset. What this means is that each child needs to be an active contributor to the class by exhibiting the character pillars of kindness, caring, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, and citizenship. They also need to build and strengthen their mindset by believing that hardwork, perseverance, and dedication will pay off in the near future.
